There’s a new player in the local motorcycle industry and it is a brand that is much bigger than what most people realize. Hero Motocorp is the leading motorcycle manufacture in the world, in terms of unit sales. More than 115 million two-wheelers in 47 countries sports the Hero badge. Hero enters the Philippine market with an initial three-bike line up: the Xpulse 200 4V, the Hunk 160R 4V and its entry-level scooter, the Xoom 110.
Priced competitively at P 69,900, you’d be forgiven for quickly assuming that the Xoom 110 is a bare-bones scooter which offer little in terms of tech. On the contrary, its advanced features set it apart from competing scooters in its segment.
Cornering lights
The Hero Xoom 110 is the only commuter scooter in the market which features cornering lights. The Xoom 110 is equipped with a pair of auxiliary lamps placed on each side of the front panel. As you bank into a turn, either light turns on independently to help illuminate the exit path of each corner. This makes night time riding significantly safer, especially when traversing roads devoid of street lights.
i3S Technology
The idling stop technology – which automatically shuts off the engine when idling for more than 3 seconds at stop lights – has recently become more common in commuter scooters. When the light turns green, usually it only requires a quick blip on the throttle to fire up the engine again. This writer initially though the idling stop system on the Xoom 110 wasn’t working properly as I found myself stalled at intersections no matter how hard I twisted the throttle. It would seem Hero improved on this and added brake activation to this feature for good measure, to avoid sudden unintentional acceleration. Good thinking, Hero.
Full digital display with Bluetooth connectivity
While most scooters in the 110-115cc category still uses analog meters, the Xoom 110 boasts of a full digital panel with phone connectivity feature. The display also reads out real time fuel mileage to help the rider monitor fuel consumption and make adjustments on riding behavior on the fly.
Premium ride comfort
The Xoom 110 is fitted with a pair of meaty 12-inch rubbers, which help smooth out road imperfections. Coupled with a front telescopic fork and a single shock absorber at the rear, the result is a plush ride quality akin to that of premium scooters three times the Xoom 110’s price. The anti-skid material keeps you perched atop the wide saddle securely and there’s plenty leg room as well, even for taller riders.
Best in class cargo capacity
The underseat compartment on the Xoom 110 is able to store most open face helmets, with some room to spare. For other items, you have a couple of large open compartments in front, where you can also store your phone as you charge using the USB port. Just be mindful as your gadget will be exposed to the elements and even theft. For bulky items, you’ll be tempted to use the spacious floor board. With this in mind, Hero fitted the Xoom 110 with a foldable luggage holder just below the seat.
If you are in the market for an affordable scooter which won’t make you feel that you’ve actually cheaped out, the Hero Xoom 110 is worth looking into.
