Grab and BYD Forge Strategic Partnership to Expand Electric Vehicle Fleet Across Southeast Asia

  • Partnership provides drivers with diverse vehicle options through fleet partners

Grab, a leading superapp in Southeast Asia, has partnered with BYD to expand access to up to 50,000 electric vehicles (EVs) for Grab’s driver-partners across the region, aiming to increase the availability of green vehicles to users. The partnership addresses the high upfront costs of EV adoption by offering driver-partners competitive rates and extended warranties on BYD vehicles. Grab’s fleet partners will also provide rental options, or driver-partners can opt for financing support through Grab’s car ownership schemes. In countries like Singapore and Thailand, users can select an “Eco-Friendly Ride” option to prioritize green vehicles without additional fees.

BYD and Grab’s partnership focuses on the shared goal of accelerating the transition to zero-emission transportation. Mr. Liu Xueliang, General Manager of BYD Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division, expressed excitement about integrating BYD’s technology with Grab’s platform, emphasizing the companies’ dedication to building a zero-emission ecosystem. Liu highlighted the collaboration’s potential to help cool the earth by one degree, underscoring the long-term sustainability goals of both organizations.

The collaboration will include deep technology integration to enhance the overall experience for both drivers and users. By embedding the Grab driver app in BYD vehicle head units, drivers can access navigation, job updates, and chats on a larger screen. Real-time data from BYD vehicles, such as wiper signals and speed, will improve Grab’s ability to assess weather and traffic conditions, optimize routes, and improve estimated time of arrival (ETA) accuracy. This integration also aims to improve driver safety and performance through direct feedback.

The partnership spans several Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, with a variety of BYD models available. Grab plans to incorporate DENZA, BYD’s premium EV brand, into its GrabExec fleet, offering luxury transportation with the DENZA D9 electric MPV. This move is part of Grab’s broader effort to set a new standard in executive transportation, prioritizing sustainability, comfort, and convenience.
