Honda aims to capture 50% of global motorcycle market share, expand EV line-up, by 2030

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. recently held a press briefing where key executives, including Minoru Kato and Daiki Mihara, outlined strategic initiatives for its motorcycle business. Honda’s motorcycle division, foundational to the company’s monozukuri (the art of making things), continues to play a significant role globally. Since launching the Dream D-Type in 1949, Honda has expanded its production capabilities, now able to manufacture over 20 million motorcycles annually in 23 countries, supported by a network of more than 30,000 dealerships.

Honda foresees strong future demand for motorcycles, especially in the “Global South,” including India, Indonesia, and the Philippines. With global motorcycle sales projected to increase to 60 million units by 2030, Honda is positioning itself to capture a 50% market share, including electric models. In regions like India, ASEAN, and South America, Honda has steadily grown its sales and strengthened its production networks to meet rising consumer demand for affordable and efficient commuter models.

The company has also enhanced its large-size FUN model lineup in Europe, where demand for recreational motorcycles is strong. Popular models such as the CB, CBR, Africa Twin, and Rebel series have solidified Honda’s market presence. Honda has also introduced new technologies, such as Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) and E-Clutch, to elevate the rider experience, contributing to its leadership in key European markets.

Honda is aggressively working toward carbon neutrality for its motorcycle products, with plans to launch 30 electric models globally by 2030. In 2024, Honda introduced two electric motorcycles in Indonesia and India, with a focus on expanding electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, including battery-swapping services. The company is also taking steps to reduce the total cost of ownership for electric motorcycles by establishing production plants dedicated to EV models.

Lastly, Honda’s environmental initiatives extend beyond electrification, as the company strives to minimize the environmental impact of its products through resource recycling and the reutilization of batteries. These initiatives are part of Honda’s broader strategy to realize a carbon-neutral motorcycle business by the 2040s. Honda continues to innovate and lead in the global motorcycle industry, focusing on sustainable growth, technological advancements, and environmental stewardship.
