in Tacloban, Leyte, Isuzu Motors Limited Japan (IML), in partnership with TESDA and World Vision, celebrated the graduation of Batch 22 scholars from the Isuzu Heart and Smile Project (IHSP) at the Isuzu-TESDA Auto Mechanic Training Center. Eighteen scholars successfully completed the rigorous two-year Automotive Servicing Course, earning the NC IV certification, the highest qualification in the program.
Empowering Through Education and Skills Development
Since its inception in 2008, the Isuzu Heart and Smile Project has served as a testament to Isuzu’s belief in the transformative power of education. With support from IML, TESDA, and World Vision, the initiative aims to uplift underprivileged youth by providing them with essential automotive servicing skills, helping them build promising careers in aftersales service.
To date, IHSP has produced 421 graduates, with impressive employment success. Approximately 66% of graduates are employed in local service shops, 26% are working overseas, 4% have started their own businesses, and another 4% have pursued further studies or careers in other fields. The overseas graduates have found success in major global markets, with 26% working in Australia, 19% in Japan, 18% in Saudi Arabia, 16% in the UAE, and 75% in Qatar. The remaining 13% are spread across other regions in Asia, America, and the Middle East.
Testimonial of a Valedictorian
Edmar Garcia, the Batch 22 Valedictorian, shared the life-changing impact of the project during his speech. “Before joining the school, many of us didn’t have the means to pursue higher education. Thanks to the generous investment of our project partners—IML, World Vision, and TESDA—we now have the skills and opportunities to achieve our dreams,” he said, expressing gratitude for the program’s role in shaping their future.
Welcoming New Scholars and Recognizing Excellence
In addition to Batch 22’s graduation, the event also marked the welcoming of Batch 26, a new group of 18 scholars who will embark on their two-year training in automotive servicing until December 2026. The ceremony featured a special Skills Demonstration by current students, showcasing their technical expertise. Several scholars were also recognized with awards for their outstanding performance.
Isuzu’s Continued Commitment
Tetsuya Fujita, President of Isuzu Philippines Corporation, expressed pride in the program’s achievements. “We are proud that the IHSP has graduated hundreds of underprivileged youth, providing them with quality education and opportunities for employment within the Isuzu dealer network or overseas through Isuzu groups worldwide. This reflects Isuzu’s commitment to uplifting communities through education and skills development. We are honored that the Philippines has been chosen as the beneficiary of this impactful project, and we look forward to its continued success,” he said.
TESDA’s Recognition
TESDA Secretary Jose Francisco “Kiko” Benitez also attended the event, praising the project’s impact on technical education and employment. “Compared to other TESDA schools, which have an 80% employment rate, the Isuzu-TESDA Auto Mechanic Center boasts an impressive 95% employment rate. This success is due to the unwavering support of our partners. The currency of the future is skills, and I encourage our graduates to use these skills to uplift themselves, their families, and their communities,” Benitez remarked, emphasizing the program’s role in driving economic mobility.
