The Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association, Inc. (MDPPA), comprising Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, and its newest member, TVS Philippines, reported a 7% increase in motorcycle sales for 2024. The association recorded a total of 1,682,482 units sold, marking the highest sales figure in the past five years. This is a significant rise compared to the 1,577,597 units sold in 2023. MDPPA’s recovery from the pandemic years is evident, as sales in 2022 and 2021 were 1.56 million and 1.43 million units, respectively.
MDPPA President Alex Cumpas expressed pride in the association’s growth, particularly in comparison to neighboring ASEAN countries, where Indonesia and Malaysia recorded only 2% sales growth. Cumpas noted that MDPPA’s 7% growth in 2024 is the highest within the region, signaling a strong rebound for the Philippine motorcycle market. He remains hopeful that the sales record from 2019, which reached 1.7 million units, could be surpassed in 2025.
The forecast for 2025 is optimistic, with MDPPA projecting a 5% increase in sales. This positive outlook is attributed to several factors, including the upcoming national elections, favorable economic conditions, and supportive legislative measures targeting the motorcycle industry. These elements are expected to boost consumer confidence and further stimulate market demand, driving continued growth.
In terms of market segmentation, the automatic category remains dominant, representing 64% of total sales. The Business Unit (BU) category follows with 17%, while moped motorcycles account for 16.3%. The remaining 2.7% of sales are shared between street bikes and big bikes. This segmentation underscores the growing preference for automatic motorcycles among Filipino riders, particularly in urban areas.
MDPPA continues its advocacy for road safety and responsible riding through its “Tropang MAALAM” campaign. The initiative promotes safety awareness, motorcycle maintenance, and safe riding practices among riders. Cumpas emphasized that MDPPA’s focus for 2025 will be on ensuring that innovation, safety, and sustainability remain key priorities as the industry moves forward, fostering a safer and more informed riding community.
