The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is launching its Motorcycle Riding Academy (MRA) to educate motorcycle riders on safe road practices. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced rider seeking to enhance your skills, this academy, situated in Pasig City, is open for enrollment starting September 27.
MRA aims to address the need for improved road education among motorcycle riders, promoting safe driving habits and changing mindsets on the road. It offers free training for individuals aged 17 and above, with each batch accommodating 100 participants.
Participants should know how to balance and ride a bicycle and must bring their standard full-face helmet, full-finger motorcycle gloves, and rain gear. Reflective safety vests are optional as motorcycles will be provided by the academy.
Documentary requirements include photocopies of your driver’s license or student’s permit (if available but not mandatory), barangay clearance, certificate of employment (if employed), medical certificate or health declaration, and a waiver. Participants aged 17 must have their parents sign a motorcycle safety course waiver form.
The two-day course covers topics like Basic Road Emergency Response, Road Traffic Rules and Regulations, Motorcycle Orientation, and Motorcycle Skills Practice and Demonstration. Upon completion and successfully passing the Motorcycle Riding Skills Test, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion and a badge.
MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Don Artes believes that this initiative will provide much-needed education to motorcycle riders and improve road safety. Vice President and Department of Education Secretary Sara Duterte also expressed her support, emphasizing the importance of equipping riders with the necessary knowledge for safe riding.
The MMDA has partnered with various stakeholders to enhance the academy’s services. They have received donations of motorcycles, container vans, tents, and helmets from organizations like the Government Service Insurance System, Watanabe Riding Development, and Honda Philippines. Senators and local government officials have also donated motorcycle units.
The MMDA Motorcycle Riding Academy aims to make Metro Manila’s roads safer and reduce traffic-related accidents by instilling discipline and proper riding skills. They are working towards accreditation with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority and Land Transportation Office to further support road safety education.
