Ride Smart: Practical tips for safer motorcycle riding during the holidays

According to the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) data, there is a daily average of 156 road crashes in Metro Manila and this number rises as the volume of vehicles on the road increases during the so called “BER” months. The holiday season is just around the corner and as expected, traffic congestion has taken a turn for the worse. To deal with this, more and more people are relying on motorcycles both for personal mobility and for commercial purposes. Yet, motorcyclists must take extra precaution lest they become a statistic. 

Here are some safety riding tips for a safer saddle time during the holidays:

Stay vigilant and avoid distractions

Motorcycling requires your full attention on the road. Distractions, such as handle bar-mounted mobile phones, loud music or engaging in conversations via Bluetooth device can significantly impair your ability to react to unexpected situations. Stay focused by keeping your eyes on the road, hands on the grips, and keep your attention on other road users and pedestrians. 

Observe traffic rules and speed limits

Adhering to traffic rules and speed limits is crucial for maintaining road safety. Make it a habit to follow all traffic signs, signals, and lane markings. Avoid tailgating, overtaking in no-passing zones and, most of all, beating red lights. These rules are in place to protect everyone on the road and reduce the risk of accidents. By ridingresponsibly, you contribute to creating a safer environment for everyone.

Practice defensive driving

Defensive driving is a proactive approach that emphasizes anticipating potential hazards and taking preemptive actions to avoid accidents. Keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, use your mirrors frequently to stay aware of your surroundings, and anticipate the actions of other drivers. By adopting a defensive driving mindset, you can better respond to unforeseen circumstances, such as sudden stops or reckless maneuvers from other drivers.

Keep your motorcycle in top condition

A well-maintained motorcycle is not only more reliable, and is therefore safer to ride. Regularly inspect and maintain your bike by checking the tire pressure, brakes, lights, and fluid levels. Keeping a basic maintenance and service checklist can also help ensure your bike will give alonger service life and is essential for preventing mechanical failures and minimizing the risk of accidents while on the road.

Dress for the slide, not for the ride

An accident by nature is unpredictable. Even if you have taken all possible precautions, irresponsible road users or some other unforeseen circumstance could potentially cause a road mishap. Hence, it is ideal to always wear your riding gear even on short trips because you’ll never know what lies around the corner until it’s too late for a safety maneuver. You know what they say, it is better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
