In our fast-paced world, truck drivers do more than just make deliveries; they transport goods across the country, ensuring businesses continue to thrive and people stay on the move. Right alongside them are the ever-reliable mechanics, who play a pivotal role in safety by maintaining and repairing trucks, keeping them roadworthy to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of drivers and other road users.
Recognizing the indispensable contributions of both truck drivers and mechanics, Shell Rimula launched the Luzon Leg of its Garahe ng Galing event on August 26, 2023, at the Don Bosco Technical Institute of Makati. Participants primarily came from Metro Manila, Bulacan, Rizal, and Cavite.
This event served as a platform for mechanics and drivers to acquire new skills and enhance their understanding of challenging situations they may encounter on the road. They had the opportunity to apply their expertise by solving problems in three key areas: oil leaks, engine issues, and tire wear. The challenges culminated in an informative session and a Q&A with Don Bosco instructors.
Upon completing the three skills challenges, participants were directed to the NC-1 registration booth to apply for a free TESDA NC-1 (National Certification in Automotive Servicing) Certificate. Additionally, they had the chance to win exciting prizes, including one gallon of Shell Rimula R4X, socket wrenches, or gift certificates to a popular fast-food service chain.
Jackie Famorca, Vice President of Shell Lubricants in the Philippines, highlighted how the event provided valuable insights into the challenges faced by truck drivers and mechanics, enabling Shell to better support them. She emphasized the essential role these professionals play in ensuring a safe, vibrant, and connected Philippines.
She acknowledged that these unsung heroes work long hours, often under challenging conditions, and may be away from home for extended periods while delivering essential goods and services.
Johnnie Santos, Technical Director of Don Bosco Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Department, underscored the significance of the work carried out by truck drivers and mechanics. He also mentioned the enduring partnership between Don Bosco and Shell, aiming to empower these professionals to be globally competitive and improve their lives.
Jovany Alejandro, a seasoned truck and heavy equipment mechanic with three decades of experience, expressed his gratitude for the program. He highlighted how it has been a great help to professionals like him who have limited time to attend training and apply for certifications.
Junny Baller, a 40-year-old truck driver with 18 years of experience, shared the demanding nature of his job, where minor breakdowns can set them back for days. He emphasized the need for constant vigilance and defensive driving to save lives, time, and money.
Shell Rimula offers a range of mineral and synthetic-based engine oils, utilizing adaptive technology to provide outstanding wear and engine protection in various viscosities. These engine oils meet the latest API rating requirements.
The Visayas and Mindanao legs of Shell Rimula’s Garahe ng Galing will be held in Cebu and Cagayan de Oro City, respectively, reaching more truck drivers and mechanics in rural areas and providing them with valuable learning and upskilling opportunities.
