McKinley Kyle Paz is striving to replicate his Round 1 success that saw him on the podium in Thailand. With back-to-back top 10 finishes, he entered Round 3 with significant momentum. However, unfamiliarity with the new racetrack posed a significant challenge for the former UB150 Champion. This tournament marked the first time it was held at the Mobility Resort Motegi, having previously been hosted at the Sportsland Sugo International Circuit. “The Wonderboy” also sought to banish memories of his 2019 performance at the Suzuka Circuit, where he suffered a DNF in Race 1 and placed 13th in Race 2.
For Gian Carlo Mauricio, the recent race champion in China, the challenges were different. His teammate and fellow Filipino, April King Mascardo, sustained an injury during practice, sidelining him for the season. This marked the first time in three seasons that either rider competed without the other. Mascardo, the elder of the two, served as an inspiration and anchor for the younger Mauricio, who has become formidable on the track this ARRC season. This situation represents a growth opportunity for “The Flash,” who will face further tests in the upcoming races.
On race day, the difficulties persisted for “The Wonderboy,” who finished 11th in Race 1 and suffered a DNF in Race 2, almost mirroring his previous performance in the UB150 category.
If there was a silver lining for the Yamaha Tekhne Racing Team Asia, it was their continued hold on 1st place in the team standings for the SS600 category. They are determined to defend their position in the next round, where Paz hopes to return to form.
Mauricio, who qualified 11th, improved to finish 10th in Race 1. However, a late crash in Race 2 caused him to drop a few places, finishing 13th.
The team currently sits 5th in the UB150 category standings and aims to improve their position in Indonesia. Round 4 of the ARRC continues at the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit, Indonesia, on July 26-28.
